Pan Fried Stuffing Patties

The other night I was making smoked pork chops and our typical sides of green beans and boxed stuffing. Lately we have been in a bit of a rut as far as our side dishes are concerned. Now I love the flavor combination of the stuffing, beans and pork, but I wanted to try something a little different so I decided to try to add a little twist on the stuffing. I fried the stuffing up in a little butter in a skillet.

It does not change the flavor but just adds a new texture to the boxed stuffing.My goal was to replicate the wonderful crispy bits of dressing from Thanksgiving dinners. In fact I had the idea of doing this a few years ago to add to a turkey burger with a smear of cranberry sauce to make a Thanksgiving Burger. I did try this and everything I tried did not work and the patties would not hold together. I came up with this recipe on the fly and to be honest am pleasantly surprised how well it works.

This is very simple and truly does not add a lot more time to the cooking. Use any type of boxed stuffing you like and make it as per the directions on the box. When you get to the step of covering and removing the stuffing from the heat it is time to prep your frying pan or skillet. Over medium heat melt 2 tablespoons butter.

Once the butter has melted the stuffing should have cooled enough that you wont burn your fingers. Firmly press stuffing into a 1/3 cup measuring cup.

Then place into the frying pan. The patties only need to be in the pan for a minute or two just long enough to get crispy brown and then flip them to get the other side.

It really is that simple. No binder needed just a tightly packed patties and just enough butter to have a thin layer of fat on the bottom of the pan.

Now one word of warning. As I have said before I liked thin diner style smash burgers I did try pressing down on one of the stuffing patties to see if I could get the same thing with the stuffing  but it doesn’t quite work. The 1/3 cup measuring cup gives you the nice crunchy outside and the soft almost creamy inside of the patty. When I told the wife I was doing this with the stuffing her words might have said “ok” but her expression said “why are you always messing with the food I like?”

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 box of stuffing (prepared as per directions on the box)
  • 2 tablespoon butter

DIRECTIONS

  1. prepare stuffing as per directions on the box
  2. melt 2 tablespoon butter over medium heat
  3. form patties by pressing stuffing into 1/3 cup measuring cup to form patty
  4. add to the frying pan
  5. let fry for -2 minutes until golden brown
  6. flip and fry the other side
