As I said in my other Sloppy Joe post School Lunch Sloppy Joes I love Sloppy Joes and I also mentioned that in the area of Pennsylvania I live in we have people from North East PA that call this barbecue and also people from Western Maryland that call it Steamers. There are many online debates about the similarities and differences of the sandwiches but whatever you call them in your part of the world I think we can all call them delicious.
Today I wanted to share more of the NE PA style recipe with you, however I apologize to all of those from coal country as someone who was raised on Carolina style BBQ I just can’t call this barbecue.
One of the best things about this is that it is made in the slow cooker so your entire kitchen smells like sloppy joes which to me smells like my childhood. Another great benefit is you can let this go for hours by itself and not have to be stuck at the stove while making it.
The prep for this is very minimal. First, season 2 pounds of ground beef (ground turkey would also work very well) with salt and pepper. In a large skillet brown the beef, or if your slow cooker has a brown setting do everything right in the slow cooker. While the meat is browning take a small to medium sweet onion and give it a rough chop, I like to season the chopped onion with more salt and pepper then add the onion to the beef. I like to add the onion when about half of the beef is browned so that the onions get a little sautéed but still have a little crispness to them. You can add them earlier or later depending on how firm you want your onions. If browning the meat in a separate skillet transfer the meat and onions to your slow cooker you can also take this time to pour off the fat from the beef.
Next add all the seasonings 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder. Now the wet ingredients, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup coffee, 8oz can of tomato sauce, 2 tbsp red wine vinegar, 2 tbsp yellow mustard, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce. Give everything a good stir to mix everything together. Set the slow cooker to low for at least 5 hours or all the way up to 8 hours.
When ready yo serve spoon over you favorite roll or burger bun, I top mine with dill pickle chips if you want cheese add a slice on top of the meat right out of the cooker to slightly melt the cheese. I paired these with batter dipped fries but to be honest with you my favorite side for these are original Doritos.
- 2 lbs ground beef (or turkey)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- salt and pepper
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup coffee
- 8oz can of tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- small to medium sweet onion rough chopped
- season beef with salt and pepper
- brown the beef
- add the onions
- drain the fat
- transfer to slow cooker
- add all other ingredients and mix
- cover and let the slow cooker go on medium for 5 hours or low for 8
- Spoon over your favorite roll or burger bun and serve
